Communication

If I am to speak ten minutes, I need a week for preparation; if fifteen minutes, three days, if half an hour, two days; if an hour , I am ready now. The world of modern day is often called the “Age of Communication and information” and most recently, the cyber or Networking Age. The word “Communication” is derived from the Latin word Communis, which means Common. Communication is a human relationship involving two or more persons who come together to share, to dialogue and to commune, etc. with others in our day- to-day life. To satisfy our physical, emotional and other needs, means of communication is very important to survive. The communication has become an integral part of one’s life now.

Definition

Various authors have given different meanings to communication-

Acc-to Wilbur Schramm:” Sharing of experience on the basis of commonness”.

Denis McQuail Defines: ”Communication is a process which increases commonality, but also requires elements of commonality for it to”

Charles E. Redfield: ”Communication is the broad field of human interchange of facts and opinions and not the technologies of telephone, telegraph, radio, and the like”.

Theo Haiemann: ”Communication is the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another. It is the process of imparting ideas and making oneself understood by others”.

What are the Models of Communication?

A model is a pictorial presentation to show the structure of communication process in which various elements are linked. It is a pure representation of a reality. A good model represents the reality of communication, but the process of communication is not a reality. Models are totally based on assumption for better understanding of the effects of communication on society. The earlier models of communication are simple but inadequate. But by 1950’s models became more elaborate and adequate.

Important Models of Communication

  • Harold D Laswell’s Model [1948].
  • Claud Shannon and Wareen Weaver’s Model [1949].
  • Theodore M. Newcomb’s Model [1953].
  • Charles E Osgood’s Model [1954].
  • George Gerbner’s Model [1956].
  • Bruce H. Westley’s and M.S. Maclean’s Model [1957].
  • Wilbur Schramm’s Model [1971].

Value of Education

Whenever we want to know the value of education at first we have to know that what is the clear concept of education? Education is the modification of human behaviour through experience and training in a socially desirable way. Education has been derived from different sources. Particularly education is derived from “Latin” word such as Educare, Educere Educatum and E+ Duco. Gandhi says” By education I mean all round drawing out of the best in child and man, body, mind and Spirit”. There are two types of meaning and education such as Narrow meaning and broader meaning. In Narrow sense when the child enters the school and ends when he or she leaves the institution after completion the course of study. Broader sense education is a lifelong process. It starts from mothers womb to tomb. All types of learning formal, informal and non-formal comes under this category.

Education is concerned with the development of whole man and each activity must contribute to it. Without education nothing is possible in this world. In this world the value of education is very high and very large. That means we can’t measure. It is a process when it refers to the art of developing knowledge, ideas, skill and values in someone else or oneself. Education changes the individual, social, cultural and behaviour of the country.

It is an individual necessity. Education is a complete development of the child so that he can make an original contribution to human life acc-to the best of his capacity. Individual should be in the forefront of the educational process. The interest of the individual is supreme and superior to the state or society. Goodness of society depends on goodness of individual. A good individual will become a good citizen. Hence maximum opportunity should be provided to each individual for full-flowering his physical, moral, spiritual and intellectual abilities without any hinderence of society.

Educational value is considered to be the most powerful instrument of social change. It attempts to develop the personality of the child and prepares him for membership of the society. Aristotle said “Man is a social being”. A man who lives the outside of the society may be divine or a devil. Without society human living is unimaginable and unthinkable. Man’s full educational development is possible only through social contacts and relationships. It is desirable to train him to surrender his own needs as well as individuality to the social requirements and needs.

Culture is a collective entity. Education promotes the culture in two ways. First it helps us to interpret the value of culture. Secondly, education perpetuates cultural values. Culture leads to cultivation, growth, development and expansion from crude life to beautiful and grace human personality. It refines physical, intellectual and moral aspects of personality of an individual through transmission of the racial experiences. The value of education should aim at cultural development of human being.

The main aim of the value of education is the most educational philosophers consider all –round harmonious development of individual. In other words, physical, mental and spiritual aspects of children’s personality should be harmoniously developed. Gandhiji advocated the value of education. Acc- to him “True education is that which draws out and stimulates the spiritual, intellectual and physical faculties of children”.

Education consisted of learning to communicate effectively, to read and understand profound writings and to think critically. The school, college, institution, political, economic and religious without education these are impossible to change the philosophy of the world. Education is a promoter of social and cultural changes. It has mainly regarded as a means sometimes for salvation, creative participant and citizenship. Hence it can be said that education is the process of the creation and enhancement.

Value of education should develop students not just intellectually, but also socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Thus the value of education in the society highly indeed and valuable.
